That’s Dad. I added him to this picture just to give it more interest. Eight months later he died from Parkinson’s disease. This painting has a special place in my heart because we marched with Dad on that journey. He’s strolling toward his destiny.

As I was finishing this painting, people at the studio jokingly asked what animal I was going to put “up there” (See Dehydrated Squirrel #5). I had no intention of putting anything up there. The ceramics teacher, Yosuko, walked by and said, “How about a goat?”. She was kidding but the idea stuck in my head. I couldn’t decide whether or not to add the goat. Wasn’t sure I could even paint a goat, especially from beneath! Finally, I reached the conclusion - What’s so sacred about this painting that it shouldn’t have a goat on the wire?

My friend Patty commissioned me to paint her childhood home, as it would have appeared in the 1960’s. The house looks nothing like this today, so we had fun dissecting her old family photos to re-create, and “turn back the clock”, including the bougainvillea, the family car (1955 Pontiac), and a couple of her Dad’s chinchillas, escaped from the backyard coop.

My childhood bedroom, shared with my brother, Vince. We took turns sleeping on the top bunk, trading places each week. This painting is based on a pencil drawing I did in 1972, a high school art assignment. The old drawing is very detailed, which made the detail in this painting possible.

“Alter ego” depiction. Like the baseball cards I loved collecting as a kid, a forgotten old ballplayer in a forgotten old stadium (In this case, L.A.’s Wrigley Field, demolished in 1969). The Hollywood Stars jersey was my Dad’s, whose dad took HIM to games at Wrigley.
